Nutrition Facts

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Facts about nutrition are becoming important to a greater number of people and that is terrific news for your health. There is an old saying that states: “You are what you eat.” – This holds true today just as it did centuries ago; even if it was originally coined when the majority of people received insufficient food. Today it refers more to the worldwide trend of over-eating.

Fortunately packaging now gives more advice on calories and servings. The major fault is that we ignore serving sizes; many people are quite happy to eat double size servings and then wonder why the pounds keep going on and the inward curves turn outward.

The new US label regulations force manufacturers to be more open with Nutrition facts and here are few tips concerning what you should check on the label.

Check serving size and use it. This figure is nutritional fact.

Check calories. A healthy adult requires at least 2,000 each day in total. Try to keep it below 2,750. The average American adult currently eats around 3,500 calories each day.

Avoid sugars. Sugar is calorie high and each one of us should check whether we need the amount of sugar that we use. I avoid sugar in beverages so that I can eat sweet things from time to time.

Know your fats. Foods that are low in saturated fats, trans-fats and cholesterol are good foods and will help reduce the risk of heart disease. (5% DV or less is low, 20%DV or more is high). Most of the fats you eat should be polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats. Keep total fat intake between 20% and 35% of total calories.

Reduce salt intake. Research indicates that our total sodium (salt) intake should never exceed 2,300 milligrams (about 1 teaspoon) each day to reduce the risk of high blood pressure. You should also know that the majority of salt is taken in from processed foods rather than from the saltshaker. – Watch those processed foods. Also look for foods that are high in potassium because they counteract the effects of salt on blood pressure.

Finally we come to exercise. The whole world seems to have forgotten how important it is to exercise and exercise burns calories which reduces weight. We should slowly work our way up to one hour of exercise each day. This can be done in 12 five-minute periods or 6 ten-minute periods until you are able to exercise for longer periods.

Why You Should Get a Cold Press Masticating Juicer – Samson Juicers Take Less than Three Minutes to Clean

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

People are constantly searching for a juicer that can make them nutrient-rich juice but won’t take up too much of their time. Well, the juicers that produce the healthiest juice are most certainly Cold-Press Mastication Juicers. However, several people do not like these types of juicers because they require a bit more time to juice and their parts are not dishwasher safe. Well, this is no longer a issue! Samson Juicers are masticating cold-press juicers, but it takes less than 3 minutes to clean them! Now you can juice your own juice at home and not have to worry about a sloppy, long clean-up!

Cold-What Juicers?

Cold-press is simply a name for juicers with motors that run at speeds between 80 RPMs and 200 RPMs. At these speeds, juice remains cold and is therefore called cold-press. This is a good thing because when juice heats up enzymes get broken down through oxidation and lots of valuable nutrients escape from your juice. Since cold-press juicers avoid oxidation, they can produce the most nutrient-rich juice. (Oxidation also occurs when juice is exposed to air, which is why you should always drink your juice immediately after juicing and keep any leftovers in an air-tight container!)

Why Are Mastication Juicers Better Than Centrifugal Juicers?

It is hard for me to call one type of juicer the best type of juicer because it really depends on your reasons for juicing! However, masticating juicers definitely produce healthier juice. To begin with, there are no cold-press centrifugal juicers out there because they all run at such high speeds (oxidation!) Additionally, the mastication process is much more natural than the centrifugal process- it chews at your produce in the same way we chew our food, as opposed to grinding up the produce into tiny little bits. Therefore, if you are looking to juice for health reasons, you want a cold press masticating juicer.

Why Can Samson Juicers be Cleaned in Less Than Three Minutes?

YES! Samson Juicers take less than 3 minutes to clean up! Ive timed it and I can do it in 45 seconds (Im not joking!). This is possible because instead of taking apart the housing, all you have to do is twist it off and run it under the tap! This way, the tap washes off the gears and the housing while theyre still sitting in place. Just let it dry and everything is already set up to be twisted back on! You will have to scrub the screen, but thats unavoidable if you are going to use a screen. However, it comes with a very useful scrubbing brush to help!

Benefits of Fish Oil: Acne and Weight Loss?

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

The health benefits of fish oil supplements are related to the omega-3 fatty acids which it contains. Research by doctors and scientists has shown that many health conditions may be relieved or improved by fish oil. And nowadays there is even talk about a fish oil acne improvement connection and if there’s also a link between fish oil and weight loss.

Unfortunately, there is no conclusive evidence at all that fish oil can help acne. What little research there is on a fish oil acne connection does not suggest that fish oil supplementation will clear up your skin. However, this does not mean that fish oil doesn’t help with acne….only that no hard scientific evidence has been found.

So why then is there talk about fish oil helping acne? The reason is probably twofold: fish oil as an acne treatment may have to do with the suggestion by naturopathic practitioners that acne may be a result of a fatty acid deficiency; secondly, fish oil is an anti-inflammatory, and acne is often caused by inflammation — or, at least made worse by it.

In short, a pimple is a red, inflammed area invaded by bacteria. The theory is that fish oil may help quell the inflammation and reduce pimple breakouts or their severity.

Even though the scientific evidence is so far scarce, we do know for certain that the vast majority of people can benefit in many ways by using a purified fish oil supplement. So, if you are suffering from acne, don’t discount the benefits of fish oil just because there may be no hard proof it helps with breakouts.

The relationship between supplementation of fish oil and weight loss is a little harder to explain. Again, there seems to be little conclusive evidence that there is a fish oil and weight loss connection. Fish oils may improve energy levels and overall health of the heart and the brain and is recommended by nutritionists for these reason.

Questions relating to dietary supplementation of fish oil and weight loss probably arise from the recommendation of fish oil supplementation by several famous “diet doctors”.

The bottomline is that neither for acne nor for weight loss has fish oil been proven. But there are thousands of studies which show it is vital for the healthy functioning of many things in the body. Not only is it good for the heart and brain development, but it may boost one’s mood and lift mild depression.

We also know that the majority of people in the Western world are deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids and therefore most people will benefit from using a high quality, purified fish oil supplement.

We hope you have found our fish oil acne and fish oil weight loss page informative.

Trans Fat: What is it, and Why Your Family Should Avoid It

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

As of January 2006, the United States government has made it mandatory for all manufacturers to show trans fat content on the Nutrition Facts food label.

What are trans fats, and what role do they play in child nutrition?

Trans fats are made by manufacturing during a process called hydrogenation. Food manufacturers will add hydrogen to oils in order to increase shelf life and improve flavor stability.

You can find trans fats in foods such as vegetable shortenings, some margarines, crackers, cookies, snack foods, and other foods made with or fried in partially hydrogenated oil. You can also sometimes find trans fats occurring naturally in some meats.

It’s been well established that trans fat can increase LDL (bad cholesterol) and increases the risk for heart disease.

There is no daily recommended value for trans fats. Instead, the USDA recommends limiting trans fat intake to as little as possible.

You should always look at the Nutrition Facts food labels when shopping. Make sure that you try to keep foods with trans fats out of your grocery cart when possible, keeping an eye out for alternatives.

Don’t fry your foods. If you have to cook with oil, use canola or safflower oil which will be lower in saturated and trans fats.

Also, choose lean meats and fish to limit the amount of trans fats and saturated fats your family consumes.

A Tomato A Day

Monday, December 15th, 2008

It would seem that very soon the old adage of “An apple a day will keep the doctor away” can be replaced with the common tomato. Why? Tomatoes are rich in a powerful antioxidant called lycopene. Antioxidants are extremely important because they prevent and even repair damaged cells in your body. There have been recent studies that have convincing results that lycopene also can prevent prostate cancer and heart disease. One such study, conducted by the University of North Carolina, compared the fat samples of 1,379 men who had suffered from heart attacks with those of healthy men. This study concluded that those men with high levels of lycopene were half as likely to have a heart attack as those with lower levels. Another Harvard study of over 47,000 men found that as levels of lycopene in their blood stream rose, their risks of prostate cancer were considerably reduced. Preliminary research has also suggested that lycopene may be linked to preventing macular degenerative disease which strikes nearly 1.75 million people in the United States.

With such supportive research as a backbone, it indeed seems a good reason to change the slogan. Do your family members have a history of prostate cancer or heart disease? Then perhaps it is time to take a good look at your diet and incorporate foods that are rich in antioxidants such as lycopene.

Although lycopene is most prevalent in tomatoes, it can also be found in rosehip, guava, pink grapefruit and watermelon. However, the tomato is the most common source but only in certain forms. For example, a plain tomato fresh off the vine has very little actual lycopene per serving (only approximately 8mg). The process of cooking a tomato and subsequently raising its temperature actually makes the lycopene easier to absorb into your liver, lungs, prostate gland and skin. The most efficient absorption rates come from drinking tomato juice at 22.9mg per serving with a close second found in spaghetti sauce at 20mg per serving.

Go Nuts!

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Nuts of all kinds (I am talking peanuts, cashews etc) have a mixed reputation. They are high in fat, but have no carbohydrates. Many people I know will not eat any type of nut because of their high fat content. Nuts have a very important role in a healthy weight loss plan.

First, the fat in nuts is 90% percent unsaturated, which means it helps keep your arteries clean of cholesterol. Remember saturated fats, make you fat and clog your veins, unsaturated fats only cause you to gain weight. Do not let that scare you off; we need some fats in our diet.

Second, nuts have of no carbohydrates or sugar, which means they do not cause any insulin release, which is associated with weight gain. They are also so a great source of protein, one of the best of any non-meat food.

Do not go over board, nuts do have a lot of calories. But they also stay with you along time. If you find you are hungry between meals, have your self a serving of nuts. Make sure to eat one serving, read the label.

They can keep you from being hungry, because they have a lot of fat and protein. They also do not trigger the body to release insulin, which can cause you to get hungry.

Do not eat more then one serving a day. Any type will do so eat which ones you like they all have the same basic nutrients. They will also help you lower your cholesterol, because of the high amount of unsaturated fats

I know they have some fat, but if your weight loss plan is good and you the nuts by them selves, with out any type of sugar you will be fine. Drink water or diet soda pop with them. If you are watching you sodium you may want to eat unsalted nuts, or talk about with your doctor.

So, the next time your need a quick snack, grab a handful of cashews, almonds or peanuts and enjoy.
